If you run a business in Pune — a clinic in Undri, a studio in Kharadi, a showroom on NIBM Road — the single most valuable piece of digital real estate you own is not your homepage. It is the three-result block that appears at the top of Google with a map beside it. That block, the local pack, absorbs the majority of clicks and calls for any search with local intent, and it sits above every organic result you have been trying to win.
The frustrating part is that map pack ranking follows different rules from classic SEO. You can have a beautifully optimised website and still be invisible on Maps, and you can rank in the pack with a fairly ordinary website if the rest of your local signals are strong. This guide breaks down what actually drives those rankings and the order we fix things in when we take on a local client.
The three factors Google actually uses
Google is unusually open about local ranking. It comes down to relevance, distance and prominence.
- Relevance — how well your profile and website match what the person searched. Driven by your primary category, services, description, attributes and the content on the page you link to.
- Distance — how far you are from the searcher, or from the location term in their query. You cannot change this, but it is why you rank differently in Undri than in Baner.
- Prominence — how well known and well regarded you are. Reviews, ratings, citations, links, mentions and general web presence all feed this.
Two of those three are entirely within your control. Almost every local SEO win comes from pushing relevance and prominence hard enough to overcome a distance disadvantage.
Step one: fix your primary category
Your primary category is the highest-leverage field on your entire profile, and it is wrong on a surprising number of Pune listings. Google effectively decides which set of queries you are even eligible for based on it. A dental clinic listed under "Doctor" instead of "Dentist" is competing in the wrong pool entirely.
Search your main money keyword and look at the three businesses ranking. Their primary categories are visible on their profiles. If all three share a category you have not selected, that is your answer. Add secondary categories for genuine additional services, but keep them honest — stuffing unrelated categories dilutes relevance and can attract a suspension.
Quick test: change nothing else and correct only your primary category. On neglected profiles we routinely see visibility movement within two to three weeks from that single edit.
Step two: complete the profile like it is a landing page
Most listings are half filled. Every empty field is a relevance signal you are choosing not to send. Work through all of it:
- 01Business name exactly as it appears in the real world — no keyword stuffing, which is the fastest route to suspension.
- 02Services and products itemised individually with short descriptions. This is how you become eligible for dozens of long-tail queries.
- 03A description that reads naturally for a human while covering your main services and your locality.
- 04Attributes completed — accessibility, payment methods, appointment availability, women-led, and so on.
- 05Hours, including special holiday hours. Wrong hours generate genuinely angry reviews.
- 06Booking, appointment or WhatsApp links where they apply.
- 07Photos: exterior, interior, team, products and finished work — uploaded on a rolling schedule, not once at setup.
Then do the thing almost nobody does: seed and answer the Q&A section. You are allowed to ask and answer your own questions. If you leave it blank, a stranger or a competitor eventually fills that space for you.
Step three: build a review engine, not a review push
Reviews are the strongest prominence signal you can directly influence, and they are also what a human uses to choose between you and the listing beneath you. What matters is not just the total count — it is recency, velocity, rating and how you respond.
The mistake is treating reviews as a campaign. Thirty reviews in one week looks manipulative to Google's spam systems and to any customer who reads the dates. What works is a small, repeatable system:
- A short review link saved in your team's phones and a QR code at your counter or on your invoice.
- A WhatsApp template sent at the moment of highest satisfaction — right after the delivery, treatment or handover, not a week later.
- A named person responsible for asking, so it happens whether or not the owner remembers.
- A reply to every review within 24 hours. Negative replies are written for the next hundred prospects reading them, not for the reviewer.
In competitive Pune categories, review velocity is frequently the difference between position four and position one. Benchmark against whoever is currently in the pack and aim to out-pace them steadily rather than in a burst.
Step four: clean up your citations
Your name, address and phone number need to be identical everywhere Google finds them. In India that means Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Yellow Pages, Apple Maps, Bing Places, your industry directories and your social profiles. Inconsistent numbers or an old address split your authority and make Google less confident about your data.
Duplicate Google listings are the bigger problem. They get created accidentally by staff, or auto-generated from data aggregators, and they cannibalise the listing you are working on. Find them, claim them, and merge or remove them properly through Google's process.
Step five: make your website support the profile
The profile and the site reinforce each other. On the website side, the signals that matter are unglamorous: your exact NAP in the footer, an embedded map, LocalBusiness structured data with geo-coordinates, a genuinely useful location page, and local proof — testimonials from recognisable local names, photos of local work, mentions of areas you actually serve.
One warning: do not spin up fifty templated pages for every neighbourhood in Pune. One substantial Undri page with real local content outranks fifty thin doorway pages and does not risk a spam action. If you cannot write something genuinely different about a location, it should not have its own page.
How to measure it properly
Checking your own ranking from your own office is misleading, because you are standing at your own address. Use local rank grid tracking, which samples your position across a geographic grid around your location. That shows you how far your visibility actually reaches — the number that determines whether someone in Hadapsar or Wanowrie ever sees you.
Alongside the grid, watch the metrics inside your profile: calls, direction requests, website clicks, and the split between discovery and direct searches. Growth in discovery searches is the clearest evidence that new customers are finding you rather than existing ones looking you up.
A realistic timeline
Category and profile fixes can show movement in two to four weeks. Review velocity and citation cleanup compound over two to three months. Competitive categories in dense parts of Pune usually take four to six months of consistent work to hold a top-three position. Anyone promising the map pack in thirty days is either targeting a term nobody searches or planning to do something that puts your listing at risk.
None of this is complicated. It is just sequenced, consistent work that almost nobody does properly — which is exactly why the opportunity is still open in most Pune categories.
