Your Google Business Profile is the cheapest lead source you will ever own, and it is almost always the most neglected asset in a Pune business's marketing. Here are the nine issues we find most often when we audit a listing, in roughly the order of damage they cause.
1. The wrong primary category
The single most powerful field on the profile. Google uses it to decide which searches you are eligible for at all. Check the top three ranking competitors for your money keyword and see which category they share. If you are not in it, nothing else you do will fix your visibility.
2. Keyword stuffing the business name
"Sharma Dental — Best Dentist in Pune, Undri, NIBM" may produce a short-term lift. It also violates Google's guidelines, is trivially reported by competitors, and is the fastest route to a suspension that takes weeks to appeal. Use your real-world name exactly as it appears on your signage.
3. Duplicate listings nobody knows about
Created by a staff member years ago, or auto-generated from a directory feed. Two listings split your reviews and your ranking signals, and Google may show the weaker one. Search your name, your old address and your phone number on Maps, then claim and merge whatever you find.
4. Treating reviews as a one-off campaign
Recency and steady velocity matter as much as the total. Twenty reviews in a single week reads as manipulation to Google's systems and to any human who checks the dates. Build a small repeatable habit — a QR at the counter, a WhatsApp template sent at the moment of highest satisfaction, one person accountable.
5. Ignoring negative reviews, or arguing with them
Your reply is not written for the reviewer. It is written for the next hundred prospects reading it. Acknowledge, take it offline, stay short and calm. A well-handled one-star review converts more browsers than a defensive paragraph ever will.
6. Empty Services and Products sections
Every itemised service with a short description makes you eligible for more long-tail queries. This section takes an hour to fill in properly and is left blank on the majority of listings we audit.
7. Photos uploaded once and never again
Profiles with fresh, regular photos get materially more engagement. Exterior shots help people find you physically; interiors reduce hesitation; work-in-progress and finished-work photos sell competence. Upload a few every fortnight, geotagging not required and not a ranking factor.
8. Never posting
Google Posts are not a strong ranking signal, but they occupy space on your listing, surface offers, and demonstrate the business is alive. One post a week — an offer, a new service, a project completed — is enough.
9. A profile that links to a page that does not match
If your profile says "orthodontist in Undri" and the linked page is a generic homepage, you have broken the relevance chain. Link to a page that repeats the service and the locality, carries your exact NAP, embeds the map and includes LocalBusiness structured data.
Fix category, duplicates and reviews first. Those three account for most of the ranking movement we see in the first month of local SEO work.
How to check your own visibility honestly
Do not search your own business name from your own phone in your own shop — Google will show you your listing regardless. Instead, use an incognito window, search the service term rather than your name, and check how you appear from different parts of the city. Proximity means you can rank first in Undri and be invisible in Viman Nagar, and that is normal.
Then look at the insights: how many people found you through discovery searches versus direct name searches. If almost all your views are people searching your name, you are not being discovered — you are being looked up. That gap is exactly where local SEO work pays for itself.
